Born in Burma, but raised and educated in Northern Ireland, Dick Strawbridge retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2001 before becoming a full-time television presenter and author (with arguably the best moustache in showbusiness). He is a man of many interests, some of which are reflected in his successful and varied television career. Angel Strawbridge is a 1940s vintage-clad redhead from East London. She is the founder of The Vintage Patisserie, a glamorous hospitality company, and author of the bestselling Vintage Tea Party series. In 2011 she opened her first Vintage Patisserie in Hackney, East London. Dick and Angel met and fell in love in 2010. They have two children together: Arthur, born in 2013, and Dorothy, born in 2014. In 2015 they bought a derelict château in the Loire valley and became the subjects of the hugely popular Channel 4 hit Escape to the Château. After extensive renovations on a shoestring budget, the couple married at their family home in November 2015.. Like many couples, Dick and Angel had long dreamed of living in France, but where others might settle for a modest bolthole in the French countryside, the Strawbridges fell in love with a 19th-century fairytale château, complete with 45 rooms, seven outbuildings, 12 acres of land and its own moat.Throwing caution to the wind, Dick and Angel swapped their two-bedroom flat in East London for an abandoned and derelict castle in the heart of the Loire valley and embarked on the adventure of a lifetime with their two young children Arthur and Dorothy.Sharing their full journey for the first time, A Year at the Château follows Dick and Angel from when they first moved to France in the depths of winter and found bedrooms infested with flies, turrets inhabited by bats, the wind rattling through cracked windows, and just one working toilet, which flushed into the moat, through to the monumental efforts that went into readying the château for their unforgettable wedding and their incredibly special first Christmas.Along the way we'll read glorious descriptions of rural life in France, with charming characters, delicious food and wonderful seasonal produce, together with the extraordinary list of renovations and restorations Dick and Angel completed, many of which were never shown on TV.As warm and entertaining as their much-loved show, A Year at the Château is a truly irresistible story of adventure and heart, epic ambitions and a huge amount of hard graft.
A book of pure joy! It’s really not often I get the chance to read, but if there’s a book I fancy, I’ll buy it knowing one day the opportunity will come. I have utter respect for this family. Hard graft, talent, desire and a dream of a better life is utterly inspiring. I pre-ordered this back in June & it arrived on Thursday. I am already half way through! It’s a good read and I’m struggling to put it down. It fills you with joy, anticipation and a ‘can do’ attitude & that’s everything I need right now!
Looks good This only arrived today and I had a quick flip through before putting it away as it will be a present from hubby to me for Xmas. There are some lovely photographs and anyone who follows Escape to the Chateau series on tv, its a must!
Superb! Pre ordered in June and devoured in 2 days. As a huge fan of the TV series and having met this wonderful couple early this year it was a must for me and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Loved the format of being written from both Dick and Angels perspective. Made me laugh and reading about their wedding made me well up. Some much needed positivity and a true escape from the current worries of the world. Sincerely hope we get another instalment from the Chateau
A year at the chateau I love this book,it's a really good read, I love the chateau and this book delves in to their lives in the first year, I'm hoping they write more, this is illustrated with some good pictures and I would recommend to buy
Wonderful read! Such a lovely book, which I devoured in a weekend! Having thoroughly enjoyed the TV series I preordered this book and it did not disappoint (neither did Dick’s practical self sufficiency book!!) I hope they write more as I love hearing about their journey, all things French, food, DIY and vintage!!
Excellent read Am a fan highly.recomeded to all the the fans of excape de chateau.Dickand Angle
The Perfect Double Act Having watched the TV show I was not sure about the book at first, but the way it is written it is as if they are in the room talking to you. I have been laughing and at one point near the beginning had tears. I just could not put it down. They should write a sequel in the future.
Beautiful Dick and Angel, this is just gorgeous. Received today and am already reading it, snuggled up under a blanket with a glass of wine. Its so beautifully written that I can actually hear your voices narrating the story as I'm reading.
