A novel—inspired by the most celebrated regiment in the Red Army—about a woman’s sacrifice, courage, and love in a time of war.Russia, 1941. Katya Ivanova is a young pilot in a far-flung military academy in the Ural Mountains. From childhood, she’s dreamed of taking to the skies to escape her bleak mountain life. With the Nazis on the march across Europe, she is called on to use her wings to serve her country in its darkest hour. Not even the entreaties of her new husband—a sensitive artist who fears for her safety—can dissuade her from doing her part as a proud daughter of Russia. After years of arduous training, Katya is assigned to the 588th Night Bomber Regiment—one of the only Soviet air units composed entirely of women. The Germans quickly learn to fear nocturnal raids by the daring fliers they call “Night Witches.” But the brutal campaign will exact a bitter toll on Katya and her sisters-in-arms. When the smoke of war clears, nothing will ever be the same—and one of Russia’s most decorated military heroines will face the most agonizing choice of all.

The flight scenes are by far the heart of this interesting book Starting in Russia in 1931 near Siberia, Katya Ivanova - although Russian names are hard to grasp - and she is called by other names in the course of the story - battles prejudice hardship and expectations of women - to fly and fight for her country and The red army. As a young aviator she is determined to be a pilot as the Nazis march across Europe. She is assigned to 588th night bomber regiment one of the only Soviet air units composed entirely of women ... and becomes a valued Navigator before allowed to pilot her own plane and rising through the ranks. Mocked by the enemy as The Night Witches. It is tough .... "There are more trained pilots than there are aircraft for us to fly." It is competitive , it is dangerous and respect from male compatriots and superior officers has to be earned. It is not glamorous and it is war. People die. The best parts that were exciting to read were the sorties and air battles, the black humour in having boots four sizes too big and men"s uniforms and underwear. Respect was hard won. Of course, as a reader, I wanted to cheer them on and applaud their successes and weep at their losses. However the scene setting and beginning was overly long... Nothing much would have been lost I feel... if the book had begun three or four chapters in with much chopped, I wasn't held by the love story or by the concluding chapters. The best writing I felt was in the war scenes where it came alive. Liked the flight scenes but the flavour of post and prewar Russia felt a little flat and dull. But the main focus which succeeded was the story of the wonderful celebrated - deservedly - Night Witches - who I previously had not heard of .. And that succeeded and I found really interesting.. Their story - fiction based on reality - deserved to be told so very glad I read the book. These brave aviators and their many sacrifices will stay in my memory ....
No misogyny here I was pleased to have read this novel. I wouldn't have picked it, but it was the hobson's of what my choice was last month. How wrong i was. A great telling of how people live and love despite what fate provides. I felt the ending was cut short.....editors pen maybe! I am happy to recommend this book as a robust war novel, with romance, but maybe it really felt like a auto biography......
At last a gem of a story shining out from the dross! What an amazing story! I was hooked in a place and time I would never have experienced and became one of the girls. Everything that happened to them mattered to me intensely. I willed them on with a passion and was sad when they were. What made it even better was that it was well written. No constantly flicking backwards and forwards through time or different places and people made it a joy to read. It was lovely to read a book without constant grammatical and spelling errors and huge mistakes in the plot, which unfortunately happens too regularly on kindle books. I wish I could give this book 10 stars as it was well deserved. Thanks to Aimee K Runyon for a masterpiece.
